Canbury School

Canbury School is a School like no other of which I am immensely proud. We celebrate student differences everyday – wouldn’t life be boring if we were all the same? One of the best things about Canbury is that we celebrate all success whether it be for academic, effort, sporting, kindness or service for others throughout the year. We build self esteem and confidence in all of our students. We see past the limitations placed by others on students with SEND and do not allow any need or disability to be a barrier to the students’ success. If a student says to me “I can’t . . .” my answer always is “Why not?” Because we believe in them and are committed to them, they leave us as the best version of themselves, ready and able to embrace everything life throws at them.

Our students are at the centre of every decision we make. As a completely mainstream independent school, we have established a reputation for delivering first class education to students of all academic abilities especially students with SEND. We offer a varied and balanced curriculum which allows students to achieve their personal bests in a stimulating, supportive and caring atmosphere. In addition to the excellent teaching and learning with in-class support, students use our dedicated learning areas for specific one-to-one support or in small groups, with either a designated Learning Support Assistant or with specialist therapists.

Canbury School provides interventions in-house such as Speech and Language Therapy and Social Communication Groups, a ASD Consultant Behaviour Analyst, Specialist Mathematics and Literacy teachers and Occupational Therapy. The vast majority of our students continue their education at Sixth Form, either at Canbury School or alternative Sixth Forms. A significant number go on to University.

Embracing Difference – Harnessing Talent

We have students with a range of learning needs – from slow processing, OCD, dyslexia, autism, health issues; students with high anxiety, cerebral palsy as well as school refusers who can positively benefit from our nurturing environment. They all leave us as successful and confident young men and women with good GCSE qualifications. In recent years, we have broadened our curriculum further to offer our students the opportunity to undertake GCSE Statistics and Triple Award Science. With the addition of our Sixth Form, we have been delighted to introduce a range of BTEC Level 2 and 3 Awards, and A levels in History, Mathematics, Sociology and Business Studies.

Canbury School also offers students the opportunity to participate in a wide range of extracurricular clubs including The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme – Bronze and Silver. Canbury School has a strong sporting tradition offering an extensive range of sporting activities for our students to engage in, regardless of their ability or disability. Students in Years 10 and 11 are offered subject ‘clinics’ to consolidate their classroom learning. Homework clubs are offered to all students – some are even invited to attend!

Please do visit us and meet our inspirational students; I am sure they would love to tell you about all that is possible here at Canbury School.
