Job Description

Grade J, £47,420.00 - £51,515.00

Are you a creative, enthusiastic and flexible Speech and Language Therapist committed to improving outcomes for children and young people?

This post provides the opportunity to work in two outstanding teams.

For part of your week, you will set up and deliver a brand new SLT service into BwD’s award winning Youth Justice Service. During the rest of your week you will be working as part of SEND Support Service, our Borough’s large advisory SEND service, assessing and treating children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs in their school/setting.

This post is ideal for someone who relishes the chance to work with a high level of independence and responsibility.

It is widely known that a significant proportion of children and young people who enter the criminal justice system have additional speech, language and communication needs and it is at the point of involvement with Youth Justice Services (YJS) that this is identified.

 You will:

  • Be responsible for creating and delivering the SLT service for this team.
  • Adapt relevant literature and resources for children, young people and their families. Provide consultation to front line Youth Justice Service practitioners.
  • Provide assessment and relevant advice for individual children and young people.
  • Adapt and deliver therapeutic interventions where necessary and agreeable with children, young people and their families.
  • Support practitioners to communicate effectively with children, young people and their families.
  • Enhance, extend and support the existing screening that takes place within the service.

Blackburn with Darwen’s SEND Support Service staff work hard with schools and settings to support children with a wide range of SEND. The postholder will join another Speech and Language Therapist in the DLD Team, which also comprises a Lead Teacher, three Advisory Teachers and five Specialist SEND Practitioners. The DLD team respond to requests from schools to assess and support individual children with SLCN, and also provide a range of in-service training for school/setting staff. Our team members enjoy excellent relations with the schools and settings we work in and with partner services.

You will be line managed by the Lead Teacher of the DLD Team and receive clinical supervision from a SLT. You will be fully integrated into the Youth Justice Service.
