Speech and Language Therapist

With a Special Interest in Deafness (Band 5)

Full Time (42.5 hours per week), Permanent Role

Band 5 starting salary £29,969

Annualised hours, working term time only, 13 weeks holiday.

At Royal School for the Deaf Derby we are looking for a Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist to join our friendly, supportive and ambitious Speech and Language Therapy team. Integral to the RSDD community, our sessions are embedded into the daily timetable, aiming to help our children and young people reach their full potential. With our approach to communication being at the forefront of the school, both British Sign Language and spoken/written English are equally valued.

As a Speech and Language Therapist at RSDD you will

  • Develop clinical skills with pupils who have a range of Speech, Language and Communication Needs, including those with Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC), Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), Language Disorder associated with Deafness, Speech Apraxia, Articulation and phonological difficulties, Social Communication difficulties. 
  • Gain experience with children and young people across the whole school from Early Years to Post 16.
  • Build a rapport with pupils through regular hands on Speech and Language Therapy sessions where you see children make progress due to your direct interventions.
  • Undertake individual, paired and small group interventions working on spoken language, communication and language for thinking.
  • Be involved in assessment, diagnosis, annual reviews and ongoing support as part of the wider highly specialist team around the children, young people and their families.
  • Devise bespoke curriculums and resources, applying research to therapy. 
  • Contribute to training at undergraduate and post graduate levels. 
  • Work alongside our in-house Audiologist, supporting the children and young people with their hearing technology and facilitating listening opportunities.

Professional Development at RSDD:

You will be supported by our in-house Highly Specialist (Band 8) SaLT to continue your professional development. This includes weekly Band 5 competency training, internal and external development opportunities and the chance to progress to Band 6 level with ongoing development to become a clinical specialist.  RSDD’s own British Sign Language Team ensure all staff become proficient British Sign Language users through focussed training schedules leading to nationally accredited BSL qualifications.
