Specialist Speech and Language Therapist - Bedded and Community

We are looking to recruit a Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to work across our inpatient bedded units and to support our Community Neuro Rehab Team.

The successful post holder will provide communication and swallowing assessment and therapy within an MDT framework in both roles. The team provides input to a wide range of adult clients with acquired and progressive neurological conditions. The Bedded Units provide short-term general inpatient rehab. There will also be an opportunity to work closely with Rehab Assistants, provide training to Nurses and HCA's and participate in the Early Supported Discharge Pathway.

There are opportunities for support and service development across both teams. We have multiple office bases and also provide mobile working devices to allow you to work more flexibly.

You will work autonomously in a variety of settings including the 2 inpatient bedded units, client's homes, nursing homes and outpatient clinics providing evidence based assessment and therapy.

A framework of regular supervision including 1:1, peer supervision, CPD and appraisal is in place. You will have opportunities to work with the wider multi-disciplinary team and to engage in service development and quality improvement. We are committed to supporting your training and development, with supervision from a Highly Specialist SLT.

We are looking for a Speech and Language Therapist with experience of working with adults with acquired and progressive neurological conditions. You will be competent in both communication and dysphagia, and you will be keen to learn and to develop your assessment and rehabilitation skills. You will be a team player and patient-centred with excellent communication skills.

• Diploma/degree in Speech and Language Therapy
• Current HCPC registration
• RCSLT membership and Licence to Practise
• Evidence of up to date CPD portfolio
• Relevant training courses attended
• Member of a Clinical Excellence Network relevant to this post
• Completion of formal post-graduate qualification in Dysphagia

• Postgraduate experience working with a wide range of adults with communication and/or swallowing impairment
• Experience of working independently with adult clients with dysphagia
• Experience of training others
• Team work in a multidisciplinary context including working with carers and other professionals
• Experience of providing SLT intervention to adults requiring intermediate care and or palliative care
• Experience of community rehabilitation
• Experience of providing Early Supported Discharge
• Experience of working in the NHS
• Experience in supervision of assistants, junior therapists and/or students

• Sensitivity and awareness of wider issues surrounding disease, disability and rehabilitation
• Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written
• Knowledge of stroke and acquired neurological and physical conditions in adults and their management.
• Good working knowledge of appropriate range of assessments and interventions for clients with language, communication and swallowing impairments. An ability to compare and contrast relative benefits to individual clients and of the issues surrounding disability and rehabilitation.
• Knowledge of a broad range of adult communication and/or swallowing impairments.
• Knowledge of legislation and NHS policy documents relevant to the area of practice (e.g. Clinical Guidelines for Stroke, relevant NICE guidance)
• Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance and audit
• Good understanding of the roles of other professionals (relevant to the client group)
• Up to date knowledge of professional standards of record keeping
• Holistic view of communication / swallowing difficulties in the context of adult community rehabilitation and philosophy to back this
