Band 6 Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

An opportunity has arisen for a permanent full time Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join an experienced team of Speech and Language Therapists working with clients who present with complex mental health and communication needs. As an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, you will work collaboratively alongside colleagues from Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Nursing and Medical services to provide assessment, treatment and rehabilitation for service users with mental health needs.

A wide range of training opportunities relevant to the role will be available in addition to support by senior Speech and Language Therapists ensuring the successful candidate has the relevant skills to work within a mental health setting. The role will cover a caseload consisting of adults who present with a mental health and communication need who reside at The Tamarind Centre, B9 5PU.

The post offers no weekend working; flexible working requests are considered up to 37.5 hours.

Main duties of the job

Working autonomously the role will be varied and include assessment, planning and implementing evidence based practice, reviewing and evaluating therapy using outcome measures, providing advice to other professionals regarding the management of clients with communication needs, modifying materials, attending and contributing to clinical team meetings, report writing and completing administrative tasks relevant to the role.

The successful candidate will initially enter a supportive probation period of six months.

The post holder must have a Speech and Language degree qualification and be registered with the HCPC. Membership to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists is desirable.

Person Specification Application form and interview
  • A recognised professional degree qualification in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Knowledge of a range of therapeutic interventions relevant to client group
  • Knowledge and understanding of the application of relevant SLT diagnostics, theoretical models, and approaches relevant to service users
  • Demonstrates clear clinical reasoning based on evidence based practice
  • Knowledge of a range of therapeutic interventions relevant to client group
  • Ability to communicate complex, sensitive and emotional information using a variety of modes of communication, being able to adapt methods/style/approach as appropriate, overcoming barriers to understanding
  • Awareness of clinical governance and its relationship to clinical effectiveness and service user's safety and service user's experience
  • Dysphagia Qualified
  • Some knowledge of presentation of communication needs associated to the client group
  • Some clinical experience of working with clients who present with a complex mental health need
  • Experience of working in a dynamic working environment
