Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) - Adult Community, Camden (Band 5)

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Speech and Language Therapist to join our multi-disciplinary community rehabilitation team. Our office base is in St Pancras Hospital (close to the amenities and transport links of Kings Cross, Euston and Camden), and we see patients in the community across Camden, which is a vibrant and diverse inner London borough.

Main duties of the job

You will join our Camden Neurology and Stroke Service - a well-established, highly-respected and supportive team comprising speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists, and rehabilitation assistants. You will be committed to providing a goal-focused, evidence-based service to adults with acquired communication and swallowing difficulties.

About us

You will have a stimulating varied caseload and gain broad clinical experience working across multiple community pathways. The role offers a valuable opportunity to develop and consolidate skills working with patients from: Early Supported Discharge (post-acute stroke), Neurorehab (stroke, head injury, progressive neuro), Palliative Care, and a range of other long-term conditions affecting communication and/or swallowing (eg dementia, COPD). You will join at an exciting time where we are developing Camden's new Integrated Neighbourhood Team model to offer more holistic support to residents as described in the NHS Ten Year Plan.

You may also have the opportunity to gain additional experience on the in-patient wards within St Pancras Rehabilitation Unit (neurology, multi-pathology and disability management).

Job responsibilities

This post will suit a Speech and Language Therapist looking to develop and consolidate skills working with adults with acquired communication and swallowing difficulties. You will bring robust relevant clinical experience from your current / NQP role(s). You will be well supported by a stable, compassionate, supportive and flexible team of SLTs (B6 B8a). You will also gain valuable peer support and learning opportunities working closely alongside our wonderful multidisciplinary colleagues.

Person Specification Education and Qualifications
  • Degree in Speech & Language Therapy.
  • State registration with HCPC.
  • Professional registration with RCSLT.
Experience
  • Adults with acquired communication difficulties.
  • Adults with acquired eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties.
  • Working in the community.
  • Multidisciplinary working.
  • Administrative and/or Project work.
  • Techniques and strategies required to assess and support/treat people with communication difficulties.
  • Techniques and strategies required to assess and support/treat people with eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties.
  • Relevant frameworks including: NICE guidance, HCPC and RCSLT standards, NHS and Trust policies and guidance, relevant legislation.
Skills and Competencies
  • Ability to demonstrate commitment to multidisciplinary team working.
  • Ability to form effective working relationships with professionals internal and external to the organisation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to produce clear and accurate clinical notes and reports promptly.
  • Excellent organisational skills. Able to prioritise work & caseload.
  • Able to work on own initiative with direction. Able to judge appropriately when advice, direction or approval is required.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of confidentiality in the NHS.
  • Good skills of self awareness and the impact on others.
  • Strong computer literacy skills and ability to use clinical systems and Microsoft Office packages.
  • Able to travel within a geographical area to meet the requirements of the role.
  • Commitment to clinical and professional development.
  • Ability to reflect on own clinical practice and learning needs.
  • Awareness of approaches required to support clients & carers with challenging behaviour, mental health needs or in high levels of distress.
  • Able to delegate to and/or support colleagues including: rehabilitation assistants, students, carers, administrators.
