Job Description

Glasshouse College is part of Ruskin Mill Trust, a leading charitable organisation providing innovative and experiential education and training for young people marginalised by disadvantage, exclusion or special learning needs. Inspired by Rudolf Steiner, William Morris and John Ruskin, the college actively promotes the industrial heritage of the Black Country, craftsmanship and entrepreneurship in traditional and contemporary industry and crafts.

The College provides an innovative and diverse Practical Skills Therapeutic Education (PSTE) curriculum and our students benefit from an extensive range of nutritional, therapeutic and medical support in each college. Each core element of the educational cycle is designed to establish active and positive relationships with nature and the community through a holistic approach to human development. This supports three key stages: overcoming barriers to learning; becoming skilled and being ready to engage and give back to the community.

Speech and Language Therapist

40 hours, 52 weeks 

Newly qualified Salary Range: £33,766.53 - £35,103.26 (Including £2,000 market supplement) - With progression opportunities up to £36,441.06

Qualified Development Salary Range:  £40,191 - £41,721 (Including £2,000 market supplement) - With progression opportunities up to £43,250

Experienced Salary Range:  £44,125 - £45,764 (Including £2,000 market supplement) - With progression opportunities up to £47,403

To be appointed on the higher grade the additional experiences are required:Experience of working with adolescents/children (adolescents/children – depending on site)  with SEND, Experience in delivering training to a wide range of staff and to be able to provide SALT professional supervision to other SALT within the local provisions. 

Applicants who apply for this role at the current time will receive a Welcome Bonus of £2,500 (subject to Tax/NI) after successful completion of their 6 month probation period  

We are open to applicants who would prefer to work term time only - Salary will be Pro-rata 

Working collaboratively with our outstanding college, you will deliver bespoke assessment and intervention plans for our students with a range of learning and communication needs, including developmental trauma, autism, ADHD, PDA, ASD, Anxiety and complex SEMH needs. You may be newly qualified and looking for your first role, or an experienced Speech and Language Therapist who is keen to embrace a new challenge working within a therapeutic educational setting.

As a Speech and Language Therapist with the Trust, you would have the opportunity to,

  • Work collaboratively with the College to promote, and further embed, the Total Communication initiative, supporting our students in accessing a range of communication methods. To include high and low tech AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication).
  • Embrace the opportunity to work flexibly and creatively with our students at a universal, targeted and specialist level
  • Providing a holistic approach to the management of your own caseload, ensuring coverage of EHCP targets and student need, nurturing solid working relationships with staff and students.
  • Work with students across a variety of settings, including classroom settings, within the grounds at Glasshouse College and at Vale Head Farm in Kinver, an extension to our college provision.
  • Understand how your support may be further embedded within community and residential settings and be empowered to think innovatively on how this can be delivered as part of the Student care plan
  • Deliver appropriate interventions, including informal and formal assessment through observation and staff/parent/carer liaison.
  • Deliver weekly direct (1:1), small group and class-based interventions, including therapy in the craft and outdoor space
  • Support and encourage the use of Zones of Regulation across our educational setting
  • The opportunity to facilitate meaningful change with hands-on intervention and practice.
  • Protected time for reflection and MDT liaison with the therapies team, staff and wider trust as well the opportunities to upskill staff to embed practices across the curriculum.

To undertake this position successfully you will have:

  • Membership of the Health Professional Council and be a Fully Certified member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT)
  • BA or BSc in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent
  • Experience of working with autism, learners with learning difficulties and/ or learning disabilities and social-emotional behaviour.

The successful applicant will take part in an interactive induction to experience the crafts within the curriculum and experience the student journey. You would also be provided with financial support toward the cost of clinical supervisions.
