Royal School for the Deaf Derby is a unique provider of day and residential placements for deaf children and young people from Early Years though to Post 16.  We are a speaking and signing community determined to ensure all children and young people develop a positive sense of identity, achieve their potential and leave with the know-what and know-how to enjoy life beyond school. 

 We are looking for either a part time highly specialist Band 7 Speech or Language Therapist (SaLT) with experience of working with deaf children and proficient British Sign Language skills or, a full time Band 5 SaLT with a passion for both Spoken English and British Sign Language, who is keen to train in the specialism.  The role is part of a wider in-house team around the child including three other SaLTs, Audiology, subject specialist Teachers of the Deaf and competent, qualified Education Assistants.

 Speech and Language Therapy aim to provide the best possible services to children and young people.  The SaLT team is innovative, friendly and committed to all children and young people becoming skilled communicators in their chosen language.  SaLT is at the forefront of the school’s approach to communication which values English and British Sign Language equally.

 The overall purpose of the role is to deliver individual and group Speech and Language Therapy sessions and ensure hearing technologies are appropriate and accessible to all children and young people who wish to use them.

  • Join a team of Speech and Language Therapists led by a Highly Specialist SaLT who supports across all departments.  Work with our in school Clinical Audiologist.   • Contribute to exciting innovative work as we continue to develop SaLT practises and resources for working with deaf children and young people. 
  • Depending upon experience
    • Develop specialist therapy skills through delegated responsibilities, mentoring, external training and effective working practises. 
    • Complete your band 5 competencies within a structured programme of both in house and external training, with timetabled supervision and support sessions.  Access in-house BSL courses leading to the Signature Level 3 qualification. Receive support and training from a range of specialist professionals with specific CPD opportunities related to your role. 

The School is committed to work life balance.  As SaLTs the contract is pro-rata term time only allowing for travel and other life opportunities around your working hours. This role is a Regulated Activity under the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act. The person appointed will be expected to fully participate in the school’s proactive approach to safeguarding vulnerable groups and complete an application for an enhanced criminal record disclosure.
