Experienced Adult Speech and Language Therapist

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, confident, and motivated Speech and Language Therapist to join our well-established independent SLT team.

We are a forward-thinking practice based in Appleby Magna near junction 11 of the M42.  We deliver specialist services across the Midlands and nationally through in-person and teletherapy models with some in-person contract caseload in the Leeds area. 

Our clients include children, young people and adults with a range of diagnoses including: autism, cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, learning disabilities, stroke, progressive neurological conditions. We also work with people with a range of complex needs.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for your own SLT caseload working autonomously across multiple settings. You will lead clinical decision-making, manage dysphagia confidently, supervise junior staff, and contribute to service development. You will also work within contracted service arrangements where maintaining strong professional relationships is essential. 

You will have the ability to deliver training to staff members within our contract venues and to our own staff team as part of our CPD programme.

Experience

Advanced Clinical Expertise

• Experience working autonomously with adults with acquired brain injury, learning disabilities and stroke.

• Competent in dysphagia assessment and management, including:

• complex dysphagia decision-making

• risk-feeding discussions

• care-plan development

• MDT training and support.

• Skilled in managing clients with cognitive-communication disorders, aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia, and complex behavioural presentations.

• Ability to lead complex case formulation and deliver specialist intervention plans.
  
  

Autonomous Community Practice

• Ability to independently plan, manage, and prioritise a diverse caseload across community settings, rehabilitation units, care homes, and case-managed packages.

• Skilled in balancing clinical demand, travel, contracted hours, and reporting requirements.

• Experience working within rehabilitation, residential care home based SLT services.

• Confidence managing fluctuating caseload pressures and problem-solving service delivery challenges.
  
  

Leadership, Supervision & Service Development

• Experience supervising NQPs, students, and SLTAs, including competency development and reflective practice.

• Ability to provide clinical leadership within the team including:

• contributing to service development

• supporting quality assurance processes.

• Confidence delivering training to MDT colleagues, care staff, and external partners.

• Ability to model evidence-based practice and support others to embed it.
  
  

Safeguarding & Professional Responsibilities

• Strong understanding of safeguarding responsibilities for adults with complex needs.

• Ability to escalate concerns appropriately and contribute to safeguarding meetings.

• Skilled in risk assessment, risk management, and collaborative decision-making.

• Ability to maintain accurate clinical records in line with HCPC standards.

• Confidence representing the service in MDT meetings, case conferences, and professional forums.
  
  

Communication & Relationship Building

• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and clinical reasoning skills.

• Skilled in building effective therapeutic relationships with clients, families, carers, and MDT colleagues.

• Ability to manage sensitive conversations, including risk-feeding, capacity, and complex family dynamics.

Person Specification

Training and Qualifications

• Recognised Speech & Language Therapy degree qualification (essential)

• Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Licence to Practise (essential)

• Registered member of RCSLT (essential)

• Satisfactory DBS check (essential)

• Post-basic dysphagia qualification (essential) 

• Relevant training related to brain injury and learning disability (essential).

• Competent IT and digital documentation skills.

• Full driving licence and business-use car insurance.

• Willingness to travel across the Midlands and regularly to the Leeds area.
