Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

A highly specialist Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) is required at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN) to work as a rotational band 7 post covering stroke, neurosurgery, neuro-rehab, neurooncology and neurocritical care. Patients will have a wide range of acute, chronic and progressive speech, language and swallowing disorders.
You will join a team of SLTs which has a well-established system for formal and informal support and clinical and professional supervision. The SLT service is high profile within the multidisciplinary services and offers specialist development and an excellent learning environment.

Person Specification Knowledge and Qualifications
- HCPC Licence to practice as SLT
- Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
- Registered member of RCSLT
- Member of Neurological CEN
- Successful completion of highly specialist post graduate study relevant to communication (e.g. aphasia, dysarthria, dementia) and swallowing disorders (accredited dysphagia course) at MSc level or equivalent
- Basic counselling
- Training in SLT student clinical supervision
- Successful completion of highly specialist/expert short courses in tracheostomy assessment and management (including use of speaking valves for patients on ventilators), interpretation of videofluoroscopy and the highly specialist assessment and management of dysphagia (cervical auscultation, MSc modules)
- Evidence of working within the NHS or equivalent
Experience
- Excellent use of highly specialist assessment tools and procedures to evaluate swallowing disorders, communication and cognitive communication, speech & language skills in an adult acute population
- Accurate phonetic/ph nemic transcription of spoken language
- Accurate interpretation of videofluoroscopy assessment
- Excellent use of highly specialist range of therapeutic interventions relevant to adults with acute acquired neurology, especially dysphagia demonstrating the evidence base for these approaches
- Ability to develop & implement short term clinically based projects
- Demonstrates knowledge of RCSLT and HCPC's code of ethics and professional conduct
- Effective management of change skills including flexibility in approach to changes in patient and service needs
Communication
- Excellent verbal and written skills
- Skills in delivering presentations and training including basic adaptations to presentation/training style for a range of audiences
Personal and People Development
- Experience of approaches to mentoring, advising, supporting and clinically supervising less experienced SLTs and support staff
Responsibilities towards promoting Equality Diversity and Inclusion
- Demonstratable understanding of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
- Knowledge of the NHS obligations under the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duties
Infection prevention and control
- Being familiar with, and adhering to Trust policies and guidance on infection prevention and control. Completing all required training and education (both via e learning and face to face) on infection prevention and control. Including infection prevention and control as an integral part of your continuous personal/professional development and included in your annual appraisal. Taking personal responsibility so far as is reasonably practicable, in helping ensure that effective prevention and control of healthcare infection is maintained.
