Specialist Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist

The Hounslow Speech and Language Therapy Team are seeking a dynamic and experienced therapist to join as our Lead for Complex Needs.

We are looking for a therapist who has significant experience of working with babies, children and young people with complex needs, with a specialist interest in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Post graduate dysphagia training is desirable, and a small clinical caseload could be included in the role.

Main duties of the job

Hounslow Children's Speech and Language Therapy Service is a large well integrated team. We are committed to supporting staff in developing their skills and expertise.

We offer a comprehensive supervision and appraisal structure, peer support and both internal and external CPD opportunities.

In support of the above the role includes the opportunity to be involved in training and supervision of staff as well as service development. The senior leadership team works closely together to continue to shape and develop the service, alongside other leads in Children's Therapy Services e.g. physiotherapy and occupational therapy.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Degree / diploma or other professional Speech and Language Therapy qualification
  • Registered with HCPC
  • MSc or equivalent post graduate study and training in specialist area (e.g. complex needs / AAC)
Experience
  • Significant experience as a Speech and Language Therapist working within specialist field (e.g. complex needs / AAC)
  • Experience of carrying out specialist assessments and intervention relevant to the client group
  • Extensive experience of assessing and implementing the use of AAC (A total communication approach)
  • Extensive experience of supervising less experienced SLTs
  • Experience of training others including parents/ caregivers in specialist area
Knowledge
  • Extensive knowledge of assessing and using paper based and power based AAC
  • Fully embedded understanding of the roles of other professionals relevant to the client group
Skills
  • Ability to communicate highly complex or sensitive advice and information to others
  • Highly developed negotiation and problem-solving skills
  • Able to manage competing demands/ priorities. Be flexible and organised.
  • Highly developed analytical, evaluation and reflection skills
