The role

An experienced, forward thinking, neuro affirming practitioner is required for this post based with the Glasgow City Speech and Language Therapy Team, initially within the North West Team. You will provide care in alignment with person centred care and Realistic Medicine Principles to help children and families who have a range of communication, neurodevelopmental and eating and drinking differences within the community based teams.

Collaborative and direct working with and into the ND service pathway is a key part of this role. Building relationships and working effectively with the wider children's workforce to help them understand and create the conditions needed to support communication difference is a critical component of this role.

Care from the service is designed flexibly around the needs of our young people and will be provided across all settings where they are, including home, pre 5, mainstream and ASN education establishments as well as health settings. The team offers a high level of robust clinical supervision and governance structures with ongoing practice development opportunities.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

Permanent, full time post of 36 hours per week.

Role based at the West Centre, G15 7TS.

Shift pattern Monday to Friday.

Key responsibilities
  • Assess, diagnose and provide therapy as appropriate to children and young people with speech, language and communication difficulties, including planning and delivery of specialised therapy programmes tailored to suit the needs of individuals, including complex cases.
  • Manage and prioritise own caseload as an autonomous practitioner, analysing client risk and need. Caseload allocation and monitoring will be directed by the relevant SLT Team Leader and/or SLT Manager.
  • Engage effectively in clinical supervision, peer review, operational management and Care Aims arrangements and processes that are critical to the effective delivery of SLT services.
  • Where appropriate and required, review referrals in conjunction with SLT Team Leader/SLT Manager within the locality team, making decisions regarding referral of cases to other agencies as appropriate, e.g., CAMHS, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Educational Psychology for further investigation or diagnosis.
  • Evaluate programmes of therapy and progress patient care using evidence based practice through the service towards discharge.
  • Make decisions regarding discharge of clients from the service.
  • Maintain accurate client records and contemporaneous notes, ensuring client confidentiality and adherence to the Data Protection Act, and provide accurate and timely written and verbal reports.
  • Work collaboratively with education staff, families and medical staff to jointly devise and implement individual education plans (IEPs)/goals and ensure effective multi professional working.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job

Essential Requirements:

  • Appropriate Ordinary/Honours degree in Speech and Language Pathology.
  • Certificate to Practice as a Speech and Language Therapist as awarded by the RCSLT.
  • Membership of RCSLT.
  • Registration with Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Experienced Speech & Language Therapist with evidence of postgraduate clinical experience working with a complex paediatric caseload.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Postgraduate qualification in dysphagia. If candidate does not have this they will be supported to gain skills in this area once in post - this will be a required clinical skillset and qualification for the successful candidate.
