Job overview
Open to newly qualified professionals and students due to complete their qualification during this calendar year. Successful applicants may receive a conditional offer subject to completion of training and registration.
The role is part of the Cornwall Adult Learning Disabilities Team, based in the East Team, providing services to the East of Cornwall Learning Disability community as part of a dynamic and enthusiastic Multi-Disciplinary Team.
Key responsibilities
- Provide communication assessment and interventions using core speech and language therapy skills for adults with a learning disability.
- Contribute to the assessment of eating and drinking difficulties under supervision of specialist SLTs, monitoring health outcomes and progress through review of care plans.
- Offer services to a caseload of adults aged 18 and over with learning disabilities who are referred to the service.
- Deliver training programmes related to communication needs and dysphagia.
- Work with people who have a learning disability alongside a wide range of health professionals, other partners and agencies to reduce health inequalities and promote access to mainstream health services.
- Support specialist assessment of those with complex needs under supervision, including complex communication and/or eating and drinking difficulties.
- Deliver specialist intervention such as keyword signing, intensive interaction and AAC.
Person specification Education / Qualifications
- Current professional registration with HCPC.
- Evidence of being an autonomous SLT practitioner.
- Degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
Skills and Aptitude
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Evidence of training or teaching other staff in an MDT or multi-agency setting.
- Ability to work alone and as part of a team.
- Ability to manage own time and caseload.
- Interest and passion to work with people with learning disabilities.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of best practice in core SLT practice.
- Understanding the health needs of people with a learning disability.
