As an integrated Trust, Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust (LSCFT) delivers a comprehensive range of services, including:

  • Primary and secondary mental health care for children and adults, including specialist inpatient child and adolescent mental health provision, perinatal mental health, and forensic services with low and medium secure care.
  • Specialist mental health inpatient care for individuals with learning disabilities, alongside specialist community support for children and adults with learning disabilities and autism, including intensive support.
  • Extensive community physical health and well-being services for children and adults, covering prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and long term condition management.

The Trust was first established in 2002 and employs approximately 7,500 staff who provide care from more than 400 sites. The organisation offers opportunities for medics, mental health, general nurses, children's nurses, allied health professionals, psychology, administration and clerical staff, apprentices and volunteers, as well as those specialising in learning disabilities and community physical health services.

About the Role

Speech and language therapists who wish to widen their experience and develop a specialism working with adults who have learning disabilities are invited to join our multidisciplinary community learning disability health team.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver speech language therapy intervention to meet the communication and dysphagia needs of adults referred to the team.
  • Develop specialist skills across dysphagia, AAC, total communication and high level language difficulties with clinical supervision from senior speech and language therapists.
  • Take an active role in service development, including training, outcome measures and research.
  • Provide clinical supervision and participate in monthly multidisciplinary meetings with other speech and language therapists working in learning disability across LSCFT.
  • Contribute to the consolidation of best practice and support the commissioning and quality improvement of services.
Person Specification Education / Qualifications
  • BA/ BSc/ MSc in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • HCPC registered licence to practice (RCSLT).
  • Compliance with regulatory bodies and codes of professional conduct.
Experience
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and clinical knowledge, skills and experience.
  • Experience working as an independent and autonomous practitioner managing own caseload.
  • Experience of partnership working across a range of agencies and professional boundaries.
Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal, observational and listening skills.
  • Well developed written and verbal presentation skills.
  • Understanding of managing and mitigating risks.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of current key NHS developments and policies and their implications for service delivery.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of clinical assessments and intervention/treatment techniques for adults with learning disabilities.
  • Working knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act and its implications for professional practice.
