Job Overview

Band 6 Specialist Speech and Language Therapist based across the Robertson Unit and Furness ward at Willesden Centre for Health and Care. Your role involves swallowing and communication assessment, management and intervention for adults with varied neurological conditions.

Key working areas:

  • Robertson Rehabilitation Unit - specialist level 2b neuro rehabilitation service for patients with diagnoses including stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and critical illness neuropathies.
  • Furness ward - general rehabilitation service for patients who no longer require acute medical care but need further therapeutic intervention prior to discharge home.

You will work as part of a supportive and collaborative Brent SLT team with structured supervision and peer support, and collaborate closely with the broader multidisciplinary team, including Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Nurses and Medical Professionals.

Main Duties

This role requires experience of working with adults with acquired neurological conditions and a strong interest in delivering person centred care within a multidisciplinary environment.

The role emphasises collaborative working, shared goal setting, assessment and intervention to support positive patient outcomes, and opportunities to contribute to service development, quality improvement and your own professional development.

Key Duties include:
  • Independently manage and prioritise a complex neurological caseload, assessing and treating communication and swallowing difficulties using evidence based practice.
  • Collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams to deliver high quality, patient centred care.
  • Support the supervision and development of a Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Actively contribute to service development, innovation and quality improvement activities across the service.
Qualifications
  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree or equivalent.
  • Registration with HCPC.
  • Registration with relevant professional body (e.g., Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists).
  • Evidence of further study such as postgraduate degrees or short courses relating to community settings.
Experience
  • Management of neurological and long term conditions in acute or inpatient settings.
  • Assessment and treatment of complex clients with speech, language, communication needs and dysphagia.
  • Working with carers and MDT.
  • Writing reports and maintaining case notes.
  • Delivering and evaluating training.
  • Managing own caseload.
  • Applying research methodology through clinical audit.
  • Developing reflective clinical practice.
  • Member of a relevant CEN.
  • Experience of supervising junior staff.
Skills
  • Knowledge of assessment tools for neurological/community clients with speech, language, communication and dysphagia needs.
  • Knowledge of a range of therapeutic interventions for neurological/community clients with speech, language, communication and dysphagia needs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including observation, listening and empathy.
  • Ability to work in a less predictable environment and prioritise workload with strong concentration.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Able to work as part of a team and remain calm under pressure.
  • Strong analytical and reflective skills.
