Job overview
Opportunity to join a dynamic education service. Work with children and young people (CYP) who have a range of speech, language and communication needs in mainstream schools. Collaborate with schools and multidisciplinary professionals to deliver a tailored service supporting CYP and families. Build on clinical expertise by conducting assessments, identifying needs, and developing, implementing, and evaluating specialist communication interventions.
Responsibilities
- Providing highly specialised clinical support to children with developmental speech and language disorders and social communication differences.
- Collaborating with families and staff to enhance communication skills and enable full participation in curriculum.
- Supporting SEND responsibilities, contributing to statutory assessments of Special Educational Needs (SEN) under the Children and Families Act 2014 and delivering speech and language therapy as outlined in Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
- Taking professional accountability, recognising boundaries and seeking advice from senior colleagues when necessary.
- Providing mentorship and supervision to less experienced colleagues and students, including second opinions, supervision and peer review.
- Liaising with external statutory and non statutory agencies to ensure holistic care for each child.
Person specification Education/Qualification
- Degree or equivalent and Licence to Practice - Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
- Current registered membership of HCPC and RCSLT.
- Further study in clinical field, including completion of short courses and additional study.
Experience
- Work with children with a wide range of speech, language and communication difficulties including those associated with complex needs.
- Collaborative work with parents and other professionals across settings.
- Training/Experience of supporting others including more junior therapists.
- Experience supporting children, families and schools in line with the Children and Families Act 2014 including contribution to statutory assessments (Education Health and Care Plan Needs Assessments) and delivery of SLT provision as specified in EHCPs.
Skills & Knowledge
- Knowledge of typical child development of speech and language and general developmental milestones.
- Advanced knowledge of assessment and intervention options for education and ability to compare relative benefits for individual children.
- Knowledge of Education Practice and Policy.
- Knowledge of religious, cultural and linguistic issues impacting caseload management.
- Principles and models of adult-child interaction.
- In depth knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to education including the Children and Families Act 2014.
- Knowledge of service models to education.
- In depth knowledge of clinical governance/audit principles.
- Understanding of roles of other professionals within MDT.
- Knowledge of professional standards of record keeping.
- Excellent interpersonal skills - observation, listening and empathy.
- Ability to be a good team member and assume leadership responsibilities.
