This is an exciting opportunity to join our brilliant team covering a maternity leave post.

The post holder will be joining the Specialist Medicine team, providing a highly specialist service to patients at Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust. The team delivers care across a wide range of specialties including Acute Medicine, Respiratory, Cancer Services, Surgical specialties and front door services. You will join a large and supportive team of therapists, including 2 Clinical Specialist SLTs and assistant SLTs. A FEES and videofluoroscopy service is available, and training to develop competencies in instrumental dysphagia assessment is offered.

The service is based across both NUH campuses: City and QMC, with close links to the multidisciplinary team and opportunities for service development and leadership skill enhancement.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work alongside other Band 7 SLTs and the Clinical Specialist SLT, taking on designated responsibilities for team leadership and clinical care.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing highly specialist SLT assessment, management and treatment programmes to people with communication and swallowing difficulties.
  • Delivering highly specialist clinical expertise, working with diverse aetiologies and specialisms.
  • Managing day to day service operations and providing high quality clinical supervision.
  • Leading strategic developments within their specialism in liaison with colleagues and service leads.

This is a full time fixed term post of 9 months, with part time options considered. It offers an opportunity to develop leadership skills in a supportive environment.

Job responsibilities
  • Work autonomously to provide a coordinated and highly specialist service within a multi disciplinary context.
  • Collaborate with various agencies and professionals to ensure holistic, well coordinated care plans.
  • Represent the Speech and Language Therapy service at agreed forums.
  • Participate in multi disciplinary projects as agreed.
  • Independently manage, triage and prioritise a complex caseload, providing specialist SLT assessment, formulation, diagnosis, intervention and evidence based advice.
Clinical Practice

The post requires:

  • Recognised Speech & Language Therapy Degree
  • HCPC and RCSLT registration
  • Evidence of appropriate CPD post qualifying
Person Specification Training and Qualifications
  • Recognised Speech & Language Therapy Degree Qualification.
  • Additional postgraduate training up to master's degree equivalent.
  • Health and Care Professions Council License to Practice.
  • Registered member of RCSLT.
  • Post graduate experience in a specialist area.
Experience
  • Significant post graduate experience within this specialist client group, working with dysphagia and communication difficulties autonomously.
  • Experience in evaluation of evidence based practice, audit and benchmarking.
  • Experience of service development and planning.
  • Experience of supporting and supervising less experienced staff.
  • Experience working in an acute setting.
  • Experience working in a multi disciplinary and multi agency environment.
  • Advanced post graduate training in dysphagia.
  • FEES/VF competency.
  • Community experience.

  • Excellent interpersonal, observation, listening and empathy skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with the multidisciplinary team, patients and carers.
  • Excellent presentation skills, both written and verbal.

Analytical and judgement skills
  • Provide highly specialist assessment and intervention using evidence based practice.
  • Assess complex information, formulate diagnosis and plan patient management using clinical reasoning and a range of therapeutic options.
  • Make decisions on clinical and strategic issues with available options.
  • Assess and manage risk, including identifying clinical risks and conducting MDT risk assessments as appropriate.
  • Contribute to analysis of data such as caseload statistics, outcomes and referral patterns.
Planning and organisation skills
  • Plan, manage and prioritise own specialist caseload and that of others.
  • Effectively delegate and manage time within a high turnover caseload.
  • Plan, organise and deliver service training and clinical education for students.
  • Ensure appropriate supervision arrangements for staff within remit.
Physical skills
  • Capable of undertaking SLT interventions in a busy ward based environment.
  • Proficient with computer use and data input.
Other requirements specific to the role
  • Ability to travel to required areas within and beyond the Trust.
