Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

An opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Speech and Language Therapist to join the Adult Speech and Language Therapy Service in Pembrokeshire, Hywel Dda University Health Board.

This varied and rewarding role offers experience supporting adults with communication and swallowing difficulties across community and acute settings, providing opportunities to develop a broad range of clinical skills.

Applicants must have completed dysphagia competencies and be able to demonstrate sound clinical reasoning, effective prioritisation, and good time management skills. A good understanding of adult-acquired communication and swallowing disorders is essential, together with the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

You will join a friendly and supportive service committed to staff development. We provide regular senior clinical support, structured supervision, continuing professional development opportunities, and involvement in service improvement and quality improvement initiatives.

The ability to travel throughout the Hywel Dda region in a timely manner is essential.

Applicants must hold current HCPC registration and be a member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT), with evidence of ongoing CPD.

Welsh language skills are desirable; however, Welsh and English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

To contribute to the provision of speech and language therapy for the population of Hywel Dda University Health by providing high quality, efficient and effective speech and language therapy services, within available resources and in accordance with the Registration Codes of HCPC and RCSLT.

Demonstrate evidence based, clinically effective practice and keep abreast of new practice development, particularly related to area of clinical expertise.

Supervise the work of Support Workers and Volunteers

Contribute to the induction, mentoring and support of junior SLTs

Contribute to clinical teams - multi-disciplinary / agency and uni-disciplinary / agency by discussing own and others input around a patient/service user's needs ensuring well-co-ordinated person centred care plans; MDT meetings and case conferences.

Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties.

We have over 13,000 staff and together we provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services.

We work in partnership with the three local authorities, as well as public, private and third sector colleagues, including our valued team of volunteers.

Our services are provided in:

• Four main hospitals: Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth; Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen; Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli; and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest
• Five community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery hospitals in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron Hospital in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire hospitals in Pembrokeshire
• Two integrated care centres: Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion, and several other community settings
• 47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 99 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers
• Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services

• Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
• HCPC registration
• RCSLT membership
• Successful completion of specialist short courses relevant to area of clinical expertise to postgraduate diploma level.
• Accredited post-basic dysphagia training
• Knowledge of a wide range of specialist assessment tools and procedures relevant to specialist caseload.
• Knowledge of key characteristics leading to a specialist differential diagnosis relevant to specialist caseload
• Knowledge of selecting, setting and evaluating specialist treatment goals.
• Knowledge of a specialist range of therapeutic interventions demonstrating the evidence base for these approaches.
• Knowledge of multidisciplinary team approaches.
• Basic Counselling Skills.
• Well established knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to area of clinical expertise.
• Basic qualitative and quantitative research approaches.
• Knowledge of instrumental assessments such as FEES or videofluroscopy
• Member of relevant CEN.

• Considerable post registration clinical experience relevant to the advertised post/specialist area including: o Supervision of support workers o Meeting patient/service user needs through collaborative working with families, carers other professionals and the wider workforce.
• Full SLT Student placement, inclusive of assessment.
• Support of junior staff
• Delivery of specialist training to a range of audiences.
• Working with groups

• Prepared to work in a variety of sites based upon service need.
• Able to meet the travel requirements of the post in a timely manner.
• Flexible approach to work based on work pressures and needs of the service.
• DBS Cleared at enhanced Level
• Welsh Speaker (Level 1)
