Bank Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

Band 6

Overview

Provide specialist assessment, diagnosis and intervention to children and young people with complex communication needs and dysphagia. Support parents, school staff and other professionals and liaise with the multi disciplinary team.

Responsibilities
  • Assess needs, develop and implement Speech and Language Therapy treatment for children referred to the SLT service in mainstream schools.
  • Analyse auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of children's communication and identify strategies to enhance communicative effectiveness.
  • Make clinical decisions and provide evidence based treatment within clearly defined care plans.
  • Make differential diagnoses based on evidence from assessments.
  • Provide advice on the management and care of children with communication difficulties.
  • Account for own professional actions and recognise boundaries, seeking advice from senior colleagues.
  • Supervise and support peer review for less experienced colleagues and students, including second opinions.
  • Run in service training for school and other staff.
Qualifications
  • Degree and Licence to Practice from the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists.
  • Current registered membership of HCPC and RCSLT.
Experience
  • Experience supporting children, families and schools in line with the Children and Families Act 2014, including statutory assessments and annual review processes.
  • Collaborative work with parents and other professionals; experience training others.
  • Interest in developing clinical specialism in education.
  • Training/experience supporting students and junior therapists, providing supervision and line management.
  • Postgraduate clinical experience in paediatric dysphagia.
Skills
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
  • Understanding of typical child development milestones.
  • Good working knowledge of appropriate assessments and interventions for school aged children with Speech, Language and Communication needs; ability to compare benefits to individual CYP.
  • Understanding and application of Education Practice and Policy, including the Children and Families Act 2014.
  • Awareness of national policies and procedures relevant to Education.
